Preventing outgoing email abuse at LinQhost

Prevent outgoing email abuse

It can happen that a server is put on a so-called blacklist, often because a customer unintentionally sends spam. This causes problems for you and other customers, because legitimate emails can be rejected by services such as Gmail, Hotmail or Office365. Sometimes a server can even be put on a permanent blacklist. To prevent this, we have a strict policy against mail abuse.

LinQhost Mail Abuse Policy

When we detect abuse, we will contact you immediately to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. If no action is taken, we will be forced to temporarily disable email functionality until the issue is resolved. Below are some tips to ensure that your outgoing email remains legitimate.

External mail forwards

With an external mail forward, incoming email is automatically forwarded to an external email address, such as an @gmail.com address. This can be a problem if you do not use our spam filter, because spam emails are also forwarded. This can cause the receiving mail server to see our server as a spammer and block our IP address. Using a spam filter can prevent many problems, but not all. A better solution is to, for example, retrieve your emails via Gmail if you use that.

Comment/Moderate options in your CMS

Many websites, especially WordPress sites, have a default option enabled that allows visitors to comment on pages. This can result in automated emails to the site administrator, often with spammy content. Our advice: disable the ability to comment, or at least turn off email notifications for it. For WordPress, you can follow these simple steps .

Forms and Captcha

Contact forms without security are an easy way for spammers to send unwanted messages. The spammer fills out a form, submits it, and you receive an email full of spam. You can prevent this by adding a Captcha or using another security technique so that only legitimate messages are sent.

Sometimes websites offer the option to share a page with others via email. In combination with a comment field and a freely selectable email address, this is a perfect entry point for spammers. Our advice: disable this option or add a Captcha to prevent abuse.
