Set up email in Thunderbird | Quick and easy

Setting up Email in Thunderbird

Setting up your email in Mozilla Thunderbird is easy and only takes a few minutes. In this article I will explain step by step how to configure your email address in this popular email client.

Setting up email in Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird and go to Edit.
  2. Click on Account Settings.
  3. Select Add Email Account.
  4. Enter your name (for example: Jan de Vries).
  5. Please enter your full email address.
  6. Enter the password associated with your email account.
  7. Click Continue.
Thunderbird will now automatically contact your mail server to retrieve default settings. You can choose between POP or IMAP. We recommend choosing IMAP if you want to manage your email on multiple devices. Then click Manual configuration to set the server settings.

Configure server settings

For manual configuration, enter the following information:
  1. Username: your email address (e.g. john@domainname.nl)
  2. Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.nl
  3. Outgoing mail server (SMTP): enter the SMTP server of your internet provider (e.g. smtp.kpn.nl)

Port Settings:

  1. For incoming server (IMAP): 993 (SSL/TLS) or 143 (STARTTLS)
  2. For outgoing server (SMTP): fill in the port that your provider uses. If that gives problems, use our outgoing mail server: mail.yourdomain.nl, port 587.

Testing and completing

Click Retest to make sure everything is set up correctly. Thunderbird will now check if the server settings match your information. If everything is correct, your email account is now successfully set up and you can start receiving and sending emails via Thunderbird right away!
